If you cannot see AI Mode in Google, it is almost always one of four things: the feature has not rolled out for your language or region yet, your Google app or browser is outdated, you are not signed in with a regular personal account, or the tab is hiding behind "More". This article walks through the causes in the order you should check them.
1. Check whether AI Mode is available for your language and region
AI Mode rolls out per country and language, with English leading the way. If your Google language is set to something else and the tab is missing, try searching with your language set to English; if the tab appears, that is your answer, and it is a matter of waiting for the rollout to reach your language. The current state and the setup steps are in how to turn on Google AI Mode.
2. Update your Google app or browser
On your phone, AI Mode lives in the Google app; an outdated version simply lacks the feature. Update the app in the App Store or Play Store and restart it. The same goes for browsers: use a recent version of Chrome, Safari or Edge and search through google.com. Where exactly the tab sits on mobile is covered in Google AI Mode on your phone.
3. Look at your account
Some account types get AI Mode later or not at all: work and school accounts (Google Workspace) trail personal accounts, and the feature is limited on child accounts. If your colleague has the tab and you do not, sign in with a personal Gmail account and compare.
4. Look for the tab in the right place
The AI Mode tab sits in the filter row above the search results, next to Images and News. On smaller screens it often moves into the "More" dropdown. It also only appears after a search; the empty Google homepage shows nothing, except in the Google app where an AI icon can sit in the search bar.
For business owners: why you want to see this
AI Mode is not just a consumer feature: it is the screen where a growing share of your customers explores your market. Once you can see it, ask the question your customers should find you with and note who gets cited. The free SEO scan shows where your website stands today.
The four most common causes: the feature has not rolled out for your language or region, your Google app or browser is outdated, you are using a work or school account, or the tab is hiding behind "More" above the search results.
Google rolls out features in stages, so two identical accounts can differ temporarily. Structural differences usually come from the account type (Workspace accounts trail personal accounts), the app version or the language setting.
Work and school accounts typically receive AI features later than personal accounts, and administrators can restrict them. If the tab is missing on your work account, test with a personal Gmail account; if it appears there, the limitation sits in your organisation's settings.
