What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a text file in the root of your website, much like robots.txt. It states briefly who you are and which pages matter, written in markdown. AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity read an overview like that more easily than a page full of menus and scripts.
What does this checker look at?
The tool fetches /llms.txt and works out whether the file is there, whether it arrives as plain text, whether it opens with a title and a summary, whether your links sit under headings, whether every link carries a description and whether you use full URLs. It also looks for an llms-full.txt next to it. You get a score from 0 to 100 and a fix for every point.
What the score does not say: a tidy file does not mean AI search engines will cite you more often. It only removes the friction in understanding what your site is about. The content of your pages still does most of the work. Read our guide to GEO or work through the website audit guide.
What does a good llms.txt look like?
Like this, for a bike shop:

Ten to thirty lines is plenty. Put the file at yoursite.com/llms.txt and serve it as plain text, not as an HTML page. If you have a lot of documentation, put the full text in a separate file at /llms-full.txt and keep llms.txt the short overview.
Frequently asked questions
Is llms.txt required?
No. It is a 2024 proposal that no AI provider requires. It takes half an hour and it cannot hurt, but it is no replacement for good pages.
How is it different from robots.txt?
robots.txt states which pages a crawler may or may not fetch. llms.txt does the opposite: it points out which pages are important and what they cover.
What is llms-full.txt?
An optional second file holding the full text of your most important pages, so an AI assistant can read everything in one pass. llms.txt then stays the short overview with links.
Will this bring me more traffic from ChatGPT?
We cannot promise that. No provider confirms the file is taken into account. What you do know: a clear overview with descriptions makes it quicker for any reader, human or model, to see what you are about.
